“Taliasrose” is a sneak peek of Taliaschild, sequel to Taliasman that was published last fall. Taliasman tells the story of a poor young girl, Talia, who is unwanted by her parents because they need a son to carry on the family business. The mysterious, heavenly Queen Vina appears and offers her parents a sack of gold in exchange for custody of Talia. Kicking and screaming (literally), Talia refuses to adjust to life as a prisoner in Heaven..until Vina is forced to take drastic measures.

Taliaschild extends the story one generation, to Talia’s daughter. Kira comes up against her mother’s nemesis, Merda. In this scene, we see Merda’s response to being the always the villain and never the heroine.

Born to a destitute woodworker who wanted a son to carry on the family business, Talia grew up with one phrase on her lips: “If I had been born a boy.” If she had been born a boy, she would have been cherished, supported, and launched into the world with her father’s legacy. As only a worthless girl, she toils all day long to earn her handful of inferior grain.

Far away in the heavenly palace, Queen Vina receives a mysterious coin necklace from Nicodemus, teller of stories. Compelled by the throbbing heartbeat, she scours the earth to come across Talia, enslaved to a family who never wanted her. Rather than admit her motives, Vina purchases the girl with a sack full of gold. Furious, betrayed, and homesick, Talia endeavors to share her misery with the entire palace. Vina, afraid to confess her love, allows herself to become trapped in the role of brutal slave owner.

Talia, bred to expect nothing but misery, faces the first choice of her life. Will she accept love, even if it comes from an unlikely source? Or will she reject the one who offers her everything?

    Oh Ana,
I loved your wording and prose with Taliasrose. It was captivating and intriguing…. Magical and beautiful. You never fail to touch me emotionally with your work. The poem/chant is pretty, sweet and strong. I liked seeing the story from Merda’s side. There are so many ways you can take this story, I can not wait to read the rest of the story!!
Thank you for continuing this event!!

Oh dear, I should not have opened this and read it on my work break, because Merda is now haunting me and I can feel ice crystals burning my fingertips. A wonderful history to start off my SciSpanks adventure with!

Well, that gives me a different perspective on Merda 🙂 Beautifully written, as always, and makes me stop and think, as always 🙂 Thanks!

Beautifully written, Ana, but I need to know what happens now!
    Merda’s a dark horse, isn’t she?

BTW Thank you for your hard work in organising Sci Spanks again this year, Ana. I love these anthologies, but you’re still my favourite author 🙂

Hi Ana, I like Talia in this early encounter with Merda. It seems Merda has pretty bad vibes, if even the plants wither and die. 🙂 Sorry, just being silly. She left the impression of being playful. For some reason, Merda enjoys her way of being a lot, and at the same time she is rather fascinated by Talia and her endless capacity for love, and in addition she wants to harm Vina?! I love this, as it creates so many possibilities of what’s going to happen. I can’t wait to read more! Thank you for organising Sci Spanks, I have only started reading and enjoy it so much. 🙂

  6. Rose Hunt-Wolf says:

This story is absolutely lyrical. Merda as a character has shades upon shades. It seems she both admires and resents Talia. She sees Talia’s follies where Talia can’t, but she doesn’t really *know* Talia, does she? I’m loving the layers to this story.

  7. Michelle Stevens says:

Beautiful. Very visual story. “Due to length restrictions…” Right. You are just a tease. Now I must read all of it. VIP A

Oh Ana, I loved the imagery and magical feeling of this scene. Can’t wait to read the rest soon. thank you for another wonderful story.

  9. Julie says:

    This is beautiful, Ana.

There are times when I think your writing can’t possibly get any better, but I should know by now. You have an amazing ability to improve on your previous work, over and over and over. I guess that’s why so many of us always can’t wait to see what comes next!

  10. Teresa says:

This vignette is mysterious, and I’m happy to follow to its conclusion, drawn along by the beautiful language and lush world-building. The beginning “Talia was the pretty one” breaks my heart.

Thank you so much for joining the discussion! Please play nicely or you may be asked to stand in the corner. ;)
